When excessive air is trapped inside the casting it will cause defects such as internal porosity or blisters on the surface. If normal venting is not sufficient, you can always extract it out using vacuum. The Die-Shot system includes a complete vacuum control module to enable you to accomplish this easily and at low cost. A good strategy is to always design your dies with sufficient room for the vacuum components to be added such as chill vents, ducts and seals. Dies can be made and initially trialled without the vacuum components, adding them later only if they are needed. Die-Shot will turn on the vacuum at the correct point in the cycle, measure the vacuum level and calculate the time for the vacuum to reach a target level. These are the parameters which indicate the effectiveness of your vacuum die and therefore the quality of your parts. Vacuum Control Module This compact device is mounted near the machine and plugged into the Die-Shot system. At the correct time, the rugged, sludge resistant valve switches on the vacuum to the die. It contains a filter which can be easily changed or cleaned and a vacuum sensor. An optional extra feature for this product is a Duct Clean cycle. This applies a controlled amount of compressed air to the vacuum ducts when the dies are opened, keeping them free of flash and operating optimally. Vacuum Vents The Die-Shot system will function with any type of "chill-vent". These work by providing a long thin path for the air to pass out of the cavity. When metal enters, it quickly solidifies in a thin sheet which is ejected when the die opens. There are many different types of "chill-vent", including :-
