The Problems of Cold Sprue Systems

With a traditional cold sprue system, considerable heat is removed from the metal as it passes the cooled sprue post. The plunger is travelling at the slow first stage speed, giving ample time to reduce the temperature of the first metal to enter the cavity. This loss of heat content increases the chance of a poor casting surface quality.

As well, there is a restriction in the flow path at the machine nozzle and abrupt changes in area which can entrap air in the molten metal stream.
