| HotFlo! | How to Select the Correct Hot Sprue | ![]() |
Thin wall Die Castings must be filled more quickly than thick ones to avoid surface defects caused by the metal starting to solidify before the cavity is filled.
The table below enables you to select the correct HotFlo! Series for Zinc Alloys 3 and 5, based on the known wall thickness and weight of the casting.

Instructions:1. Find the total weight of the casting. For multi-cavity dies, take the total weight of all cavities. 2. Determine the minimum wall thickness in the critical segment of the casting. 3. Find the corresponding column for Wall Thickness in the table above. 4. Go down the column until you find the first 'Weight' greater than your casting. 5. Follow the row to the right and read off the correct HotFlo! Series. |
Note: The maximum casting weight is based upon making a hardware finish casting with a die surface temperature of 200 oC and zinc alloy temperature of 425 oC. If some cold flow on the surface of the casting can be tolerated, then a casting of greater weight can be made.
